| Whether you want to explore, shop, dine or just relax, you'll find Edgerton is a precious gem waiting to be discovered in Rock County.
Edgerton's downtown is a treasure trove of history. Its museums, points of interest and historic buildings take you back to another era when the town was "The Tobacco Capital of the World." The area's rich heritage is chronicled through photos, artifacts and changing displays in the Tobacco City Museum on Fulton St.
History also converges with literature in Edgerton, thanks to the Sterling North Society's dedication to preserve and promote this author's works and local heritage. The W. Rollin St. home where an 11-year old North lived in 1918 with his pet raccoon - the inspiration for his well-loved novel Rascal - is the crown jewel on a site walk of places significant to North's life.
Edgerton's old-fashioned brick storefronts are more than scenic backdrops for its wealth of historic sites. Here, as well as in other unique locations throughout the city and surrounding countryside, you'll uncover many riches. Browse quaint shops, hunt for antiques or behold the works of local artisans known for pottery, print making, stained glass, ceramics, crafts and more. If you work up an appetite in your quest for that just right gift or personal touch for your home, don't despair. Enjoy a bite to eat or a favorite beverage at one of the many pubs or restaurants in the Edgerton area offering everything from fast food to fine dining. While tours and shopping could fill a whole day, this community of 4,600 residents also offers many special reasons to visit throughout the year. The annual Chili Mania chili contest, arts & crafts fairs, concerts in Central Parks 1930's bandstand and holiday celebrations beckon visitors to join in the fun. And don't forget the festivals... Tobacco growing shaped this community and remains today a vital crop - so important it is heralded each July during Tobacco Heritage Days. AppleFest in October and the Rock River Thresheree held in Threshermen's Park on Labor Day weekend are other celebrations of agrarian origin.
The City of Edgerton has an excellent, well-maintained public park system that is complimented by other public recreation areas, school, and private enterprise. Race Track Park is a former sulky race track that has been converted into a major community park. Saunder's Creek passes through the northern part of the park. The land immediately adjacent to the creek is included in the floodplain and is a wetland. The north and south periphery of the park is heavily wooded. The remaining park area is open with scattered trees. The Conservation Club leases the west end of the park where it has its headquarters. A club house, two trap houses, and a small children's animal farm are also located on the premises. Central Park is located in the center of Edgerton. It is the most intensively used park in the community. The park is generally open with some mature trees and shrubbery. The City recently constructed a new swimming pool there. The local V.F.W. organization owns property north of Central Park which can be used for outdoor activities. Many community programs are held at the park such as, Tobacco Days, art fairs, and summer youth programs. |
